BREAKFAST @ Chawan,Bangsar

Yesterday, I had planned what I wanted to eat today. What's my plan?

Chawan @ Bangsar. Corner shop lot, open air. It wasn't so hot because I went there in the morning. However, I can't imagine eating nasi lemak anytime during the scorching hot afternoon in Malaysia. Also, since coffee is their specialty, I'd expect a cozier environment for customers to spend their time enjoying their coffee.

Well, breakfast would be at Chawan, followed by lunch at Nirwana banana leaf rice and finally dinner at Al Rawsha (Arabic food). Woke up on the dot today, anticipating a wholesome day of nice foods.

Chawan's menu. Err..they should change their front page. Not professional at all (although I knew what they wanted to express)

Interior decor, simple but refined.

Reached Chawan @ Bangsar within 10minutes (no traffic jams, yay!). As recommended by my close friend, G, I planned to order nasi lemak ayam goreng berempah (RM14.50) but they told me they haven't prepare it yet. So, I ended up ordering nasi lemak chicken rendang (RM10.90).

Another similar angle of Chawan's interior.
View at the back of the cafe. The newspapers are for selling only. No free reading allowed. WTF?! Where else can you find a more stingy cafe NOT allowing customers who paid more than RM10 for a nasi lemak to read their newspaper??? Even McDonald got free newspapers for customers to read! Worst still, I need to pay the service charge amounting almost to RM1 and still, I can't read the newspapers??!! Cheapskate!!

For drinks, coffee is Chawan's specialty. They named all their coffee using the name of states and towns in Malaysia. I asked the friendly waitress what's their famous coffee that people always ordered and she mentioned Kemaman coffee, Ipoh coffee and Chawan Frappe. I ordered Chawan Frappe, something chilling to counter the effect of the anticipated spicy-hot nasi lemak that I'd ordered.

Chawan Frappe (RM5.50). I love the bitter-sweet and coffee aroma but as time goes by (and the ice melted), the taste seemed to be more diluted, especially at the end. This showed that the coffee shot wasn't enough! Perhaps, they should put a column in their menu for additional coffee shots (if they're so stingy to give more than one shot). I'm sure most people don't mind to pay more.
My nasi lemak chicken rendang (RM10.90). Firstly, they served two pieces of chicken rendang. I got one chicken breast and another one that I don't even know which parts if came from! The 'rendang' sauce wasn't thick and the chicken meat was bland (probably will be more tasty if there's adequate rendang sauce!). No point giving me chunks of meat that's tasteless. I'm coming here for an eating experience, not to be stuffed! Next, rice was plain, not aromatic at all. The anchovies and nuts were minimal but worse still is the anchovies looked crushed. Hard boiled egg, they only gave HALF and egg, despite the RM10 price tag for this meal. Gosh, omg, speechless!
My breakfast today @ Chawan, Bangsar. Now, I'm too stuffed to eat my lunch at Nirwana banana leaf rice.

DINNER @ TGIF

Last night, seven of us ended up there for dinner. TGIF offers fresh and generous sized casual American style dining meal and if you eat in a group it will be a great experience trying out the different dishes. The place was quite noisy as some young guys were having a birthday bash. The good food and ambiance made up for it, but the lighting was bad for photography. Another bad point

Appetizers:1. (Top) Clam chowder-blend with Celery, Garlic, Scallion and Potatoes-was creamy and smooth with a dash of pepper 2. (Left) Boneless Wings-basted in traditional Buffalo sauce served with fresh Celery sticks - crust was salty-meat was tender 3. Fried Mac and Cheese-golden fried to perfection and oozing with cheese-irresistible!

Friday's Three for All- A trio of their most famous appetizers-loaded Potatoes skins, fried Mozzarella Cheese and spicy Buffalo Wings-served with Sour cream and Green onion, Marinara sauce and Celery sticks with Bleu cheese dressing. My comment: loves the loaded Potatoes skin and Celery sticks with the Bleu Cheese dressing.-Rm35.90/

Entree-Fish and Chip-Three portion of Fish fillet battered and fried to golden brown and served with crispy fries and Tartar sauce

Entree:Sizziling Chicken and Cheese-A skillet of onions, red and green capsicums with garlic marinated chicken breast over melted Colby and Jack cheese. served with Cheddar cheese mashed potatoes-Mike's comment: Chicken meat was coarse and meaty and the greens were crunchy.

Entree: Tuscan Chicken Melt-Fire grilled diced Chicken, Mozzarella and Jack Cheese, roasted onions and tomatoes sandwiched between a buttery thick toasted bread. served with crispy fries-Mindy's comment: a real comfort meal!

Friday's Cheese Burger-Fire grilled with two slices of melted Colby cheese with the classic ingredients and crispy fries-Sam's comment: oh! so hearty!-Rm18.90/

Jack Daniel's Chicken-Two juicy Chicken breasts basted in savory glaze, served with Broccoli, Cheddar cheese mashed potatoes-Edmond's comment: the portions was huge and the Jack Daniel's sauce was a good dip for the Chicken meat-Rm29.90/.

Jack Daniel's Burger-Well seasoned -Fire grilled to order-the juicy 7 oz Burger is glazed with Jack Daniel's sauce and topped with two strips of crispy beef bacon and Colby cheese, served with Jack Daniel's sauce and crispy fries-Mich's comment: the minced beef was juicy, meaty and flavorful-Rm24.90/ .
Dessert Minis-Strawberry and Oreo Chocolate-sweet and smooth- finished off in 4 spoonfuls!

The annoying 'common' cold

That’s right, I was down with a sore, painful throat and a bad cold for the past few days. I feel that the common cold is the most annoying of all the illness, thats bcos, one is not actually sick but still cannot go about the regular discourse without a feeling of unease. Since it is said that ‘A cold cures in 7 days without pills and in 1 week with pills’, I thought this time I’d take the 7 days trial :)
I am going to write a separate post on the ‘sukku kashayam’ (the dry ginger potion) that actually worked wonders on my cold. But here goes small tips that work in a big way! If you have a bad cough, try these home remedies:

1. To 1 glass of hot milk, add 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and crushed black pepper (3 to 4) and natural brown sugar (panam karkandu) and mix well. Drink it when it is tolerably hot. This not just soothes the throat but also controls the cough.

2. To a teaspoon of honey, add 3 to 4 crushed pepper and powdered cinnamon (about 1/2 inch long). Drain this down the throat slowly so that the taste lingers in the throat for sometime.

3. It can be really irritating if coughing does not cease when we try to sleep. Try having one black pepper (slightly crushed) and 1 rock salt (size of the black pepper) in your mouth. Don’t swallow it, just keep it in the mouth and let the flavor get to the throat slowly.

4. Gargle with hot salt water at least 3 times a day and keep drinking hot liquids all through the day whenever the coughing sensation sets in.

P.S: Even though the cold kept me from posting new posts, it didn’t stop me from watching a lot of movies. So look out for many reviews in the next few days!

Do you have any other tips that had come useful when you had cold? Do share them in comments.. I am sure they’d help me next time around
